On the 30th of December 1929 and January 1st and 3rd 1930 'The New Scala Theatre' Home to 'all that was new and avant-garde' staged the first London Performance Of the 'Monteverdi' Masterpiece 'L'Orfeo' Directed by Robert Stuart who had staged it in Oxford previously with his 'Oxford Opera Club'.The Opera was so new or rather so old that the Scala even spelt Monteverdi's name wrongly on the Programme.First Performed in 1607 in Mantua where Monteverdi was employed by the Gonzaga Court before getting the top musical post at St Marks in Venice. The London Press both daily and evening (Dec 31 1929) were highly praise worthy of this unusal and eunique Musical event, this 'Favola in Musica' particularly as it used a formula which if you watch a modern Performance such as Jordi Savall's Le Concert des Nations,La Capella Reial de Catalunya Performance.Recorded in 2002 in Barcelona's 'Gran Teatre del Liceu'you might just think you were watching a rather splended Gang Show.On the 3rd of January 1930 some Rover Scouts from the YMCA up the road went to the last Performance of "Orpheus" (L'Orfeo) as they were looking for possible Venues for their Boy Scout and Rover Scout Show. Now I wonder who that was ? Dr.Stu..
